Where hiring gets stuck

Hiring in sales is hard. Here is where it sticks.

  1. 01

    CVs that oversell

Every sales CV claims targets beaten, and it is hard to tell from paper who did the selling. We ask for figures, territories, deal sizes and sales cycles, then check them with referees who managed the person, so you interview on evidence.

  2. 02

    Counteroffers

Strong sales and marketing people are often offered more to stay, and 25% of UK employers in the CIPD's 2026 resourcing report had trouble with counteroffers or candidates dropping out after accepting. We test motives early and stay close to the candidate through the notice period.

  3. 03

Technical sales is a narrow pool

Selling medical devices, food ingredients or software takes someone who understands the product and can still close. Because we also recruit in those sectors, we can search among scientists, engineers and clinicians who want a commercial role as well as among career salespeople.

  4. 04

    Unclear commission plans

Candidates walk away from offers where on target earnings are vague or the target looks out of reach. We ask you for the base, the plan and how many of the team hit target last year, and we give candidates the same facts before interview.

Open in the market

Sales roles employers are advertising now.

These roles are being advertised by employers in Ireland. FH Recruitment has not been instructed on them. If one suits you, tell us which. With your agreement we approach the employer on your behalf, and nothing is sent anywhere without your say so.

Questions

Sales hiring, answered.

Practical answers to the questions employers and candidates ask most.

How do we check a salesperson's track record before hiring?

Ask for specifics and then verify them. Useful questions cover target and result for each recent year, average deal size, length of sales cycle, how much business was new and how much inherited, and which accounts the candidate opened personally. Then speak to a referee who managed them directly and ask the same questions. We do this at screening, note where answers and references differ and pass both to you, so interviews can concentrate on fit with your product and customers.

Should we publish salary and commission in a sales job advert?

We recommend it. The EU Pay Transparency Directive had a transposition deadline of 7 June 2026, and Ireland's draft law, as summarised by Mason Hayes & Curran in May 2025, would require a salary level or range in the advert itself. The legislation was still in progress at the time of writing, so check gov.ie for the current position. Legal duty aside, an advert that states base salary, on target earnings and whether commission is capped attracts people who can judge the offer properly.

How long does it take to hire a marketing manager in Ireland?

Plan for several weeks to an accepted offer, and then the notice period. IrishJobs reported an average time to hire of 8 weeks across all roles in a spring 2026 survey of 502 recruiters, who also said they spent an average of 3.4 hours screening CVs for each vacancy. The quickest gains are a tight brief, a portfolio review or task that reflects the real job and only the interview rounds you need. We aim to shortlist promptly and keep feedback moving in both directions.

What does OTE mean, and how do I compare two sales job offers?

OTE means on target earnings: base salary plus the commission you would earn by hitting target exactly. To compare offers, ask each employer for the base, the commission rate, whether it is capped, how long new starters get to build a pipeline and what share of the current team reached target last year. A lower figure that most people achieve can be worth more than a higher one that few do. We ask employers these questions for you, and we never charge candidates a fee.
